Michel Kazatchkine appointed by UN Secretary-General as Special Envoy on HIV/AIDS for Eastern Europe and Central Asia

On behalf of Pacific Friends, we warmly congratulate Michel Kazatchkine on his appointment as the United Nations Special Envoy on HIV/AIDS for Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Michel will bring his immense experience to assisting the nations of the region to confront what is probably the most difficult and challenging of all the regional HIV/AIDS epidemics.

We wish him all success as he takes up his new responsibilities.

Congratulations to Dr Nafsiah Mboi on appointment as Indonesian Minister for Health

We are delighted to congratulate our dear friend and colleague Dr Nafsiah Mboi on her appointment as Indonesian Minister for Health. Ibu Naf has been one of the pioneers of the global, and Indonesian, response to HIV & AIDS. Under her tireless leadership, the Indonesian National AIDS Commission has been an outstandingly successful partner of the Global Fund and the programs it supports in Indonesia.

Ibu Naf has always understood the critical role of empowering women and girls in achieving better health outcomes for the entire community. We are sure she will bring her great insights and experience to improving the Indonesian health system.

Ibu Naf was a founding member of Pacific Friends of the Global Fund, and has always taken a keen interest in our work.

We wish her every success in her new role.

Honours for Jenny Bott and Wayne Harrison

We are delighted to congratulate two great friends of Pacific Friends – Jenny Bott and Wayne Harrison – who received awards in the Order of Australia in the 2012 Queen’s Birthday Honours List. Jenny and Wayne were recognised for their outstanding contributions to the arts.

Ms Jennifer Bott AO
Jenny is the chief executive officer of the UNSW Foundation and a member of the Pacific Friends Advisory Council. Jenny greatly assisted in the smooth transition of Pacific Friends to its new home at the University of New South Wales and has been an invaluable source of advice and encouragement to Pacific Friends.
Mr Wayne Harrison AM
Wayne is an internationally-renowned producer, director and writer and a former artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company. We were delighted that Wayne was artistic director for the remarkable World AIDS Day 2011 celebrations which were attended by the Governor-General and Sir Elton John.

We thank both of them for their continuing support for the work of Pacific Friends, and wish them every success.

Obituary: Tadashi Yamamoto, 1936 ‒ 2012

All of us at Pacific Friends mourn the passing of our dear friend and colleague Tadashi Yamamoto in Tokyo in the early hours of last Sunday. Tadashi has been the President of Friends of the Global Fund Japan since its inception in 2004.

We recall Tadashi’s great enthusiasm and tremendous support for the Global Fund, and the energy with which he mobilised support for the Fund in Japan and internationally. Tadashi was an honoured guest at the launch of Pacific Friends in early 2009, and he was always keenly interested in our development.

Beyond the Global Fund, however, Tadashi devoted his life to projects and undertakings that furthered the cause of peaceful development, social progress and cooperative relations between all nations. It was our privilege to know Tadashi and to benefit from his wise advice and profound insights.

On behalf of the Advisory Council and Staff of Pacific Friends, I extend to Tadashi’s family, friends and colleagues our deepest sympathies and condolences.
