Who We Are

Pacific Friends of the Global Fund Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria ("Pacific Friends") is the seventh Friends of the Global Fund group to be established since the Global Fund was created in 2002. Friends Groups are separately funded and operate independently of the Global Fund, although they enjoy a close working relationship with the Fund and its officers.

Pacific Friends is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation which, in September 2008, provided funding to the Lowy Institute for International Policy to establish Pacific Friends culminating in the official launch and symposium on 22 and 23 February, 2009. The Governor-General of Australia kindly agreed to become the inaugural patron of Pacific Friends. Ms Wendy McCarthy AO was appointed Chair and Mr Bill Bowtell became the Executive Director of Pacific Friends. Mr Matthew Mitcham AM has been appointed Pacific Friends Youth Ambassador. All board members and appointments are for two years, reflecting the period of the initial grant received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
